This article talks about how to install a custom ROM from scratch. The only two things you would need for this would be a working laptop and a phone.

What is custom ROM?

In layman’s terms, a custom ROM is modified version of the Android Open Source Project. Android is an Open Source Operating System that means all its source code is available on the internet. All phone manufacturer’s install their own version on Android on their phones. For example, OnePlus uses Oxygen OS and Samsung uses One UI. However, some developers who are not happy with the stock experience offered by their phone manufacturers tend to make or install a different operating system on their device. Custom ROMs are widely used because of their versatile nature and customisable elements. Two of the most common custom ROMS are Pixel Experience and Lineage OS. Personally, I have tried Pixel Experience and I can say that it offers the best user experience. Pixel Experience is just stock Android by Google but for non-google phones.

How to get started?

First things first, you need to take a backup because you would be erasing your phone. To create a backup on Google Drive, just head over to Settings → System → Backup. Now click on backup data. It would take about 5-7 minutes to backup all data to the cloud. However, the time is be subjective due to the size of backup and WiFi speeds. Secondly, if you are using WhatsApp make sure backup all WhatsApp chats in app because there not covered in your phone backup.
